I am an experienced Science educator and Assistant IBDP Coordinator currently based in Taipa, Macau. With a strong academic background in Biotechnology and Education, I have dedicated my
career to helping students develop a deep understanding of science while building the skills needed for success in international curricula.
My journey in education has been driven by a passion for teaching, mentoring, and continuous learning. I believe that science should be taught in a way that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and real-world application. My goal is not only to help students achieve excellent academic results but also to inspire them to become confident and independent learners.
Meghna R. Thakkar Qualifications
I completed my MTech Integrated in Biotechnology from Dr. D. Y. Patil University, Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, where I graduated as a Gold Medalist. Later, I earned an M.A. in Education from the University of Bath, which strengthened my understanding of teaching, learning, and educational leadership.
To further support my work in international classrooms, I completed a 120-hour TEFL certification through the University of Ontario and a certification in Teaching ESL Students in Mainstream Classrooms through an Australian government program.
Throughout my academic journey, I was awarded the prestigious TATA Scholarship for three consecutive years in recognition of my academic performance.
International Tutoring Education
Currently, I work at the School of the Nations in Macau as a Biology Teacher and Assistant IBDP Coordinator. I teach both IB and IGCSE Biology and support various aspects of the IB Diploma Programme.
My experience includes teaching across the IB MYP, IBDP, and IGCSE curricula, allowing me to understand the unique needs of students at different stages of their academic journey.
Before joining my current school, I taught MYP General Science at École Mondiale World School in Mumbai. I have also worked as a Biology and General Science teacher at the secondary level and have taught Biotechnology and related subjects to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Alongside my school teaching responsibilities, I have been providing private and online tutoring since 2010. I have worked with students from IB, IGCSE, A Level, ICSE, CBSE, and other international curricula.
How Do I help?
As Assistant IBDP Coordinator, I support programme implementation, school evaluations, and academic planning. I also mentor students working on their Extended Essays in Biology.
Guiding students through independent scientific research is one of the most rewarding aspects of my work. I enjoy helping them develop research skills, critical thinking abilities, and academic integrity while encouraging intellectual curiosity.
Since 2014, I have served as an IB examiner for Biology Higher Level Paper 2 and Internal Assessments. Since 2023, I have also worked as an IGCSE Biology examiner. These roles provide valuable insight into assessment standards and examination expectations, which I incorporate into my teaching.
Research Work and Scientific Background
My teaching is strongly influenced by my background in scientific research. I completed a six-month research project at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, on the evaluation and prediction of radiosensitivity in tumor cells. This project earned me a Gold Medal and strengthened my appreciation for scientific inquiry and evidence-based thinking.
I have also worked on research projects at the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Bangalore, and the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune.
Additionally, I completed internships with Tata Chemicals Innovation Centre, Chromous Biotech, and Sula Vineyards, gaining valuable exposure to biotechnology, genetics, industrial research, and scientific applications.
Professional Qualification
I strongly believe that effective educators should continue learning throughout their careers.
I regularly attend IB and IGCSE workshops to stay updated with curriculum developments and best teaching practices. My training includes MYP Science Category 1 and 2 workshops, IB Biology Category 1 and 3 workshops, Internal Assessment workshops, and professional learning sessions focused on Approaches to Teaching and Learning (ATL) in the IB Diploma Programme.
My Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is centered on concept-based learning, inquiry, and student engagement.
I encourage students to ask questions, think critically, and connect scientific concepts to real-world situations. Whether I am teaching IB Biology HL, IGCSE Biology, MYP Sciences, or mentoring students through research projects, my focus remains the same: helping students understand deeply rather than memorize superficially.
I believe that every student has the potential to succeed when provided with the right guidance, encouragement, and learning environment. My aim is to create engaging, supportive, and academically challenging learning experiences that help students achieve their goals while developing a lifelong love for learning.
Additional Roles and Student Guidance
In addition to teaching, I provide academic and career guidance to students in Grades 10 and 12, as well as university students pursuing Biotechnology and related fields.
I enjoy helping students explore future opportunities and make informed decisions about higher education and career pathways.
Beyond academics, I actively promote science learning through workshops, clubs, and enrichment activities. I have conducted Science Clubs for younger students and DNA Technology workshops in collaboration with the University of Saint Joseph.
Outside of work, I enjoy reading science journals, biographies, non-fiction books, and topics related to mythology. Staying connected to new developments in science and education helps me bring fresh perspectives into my teaching and continue growing as an educator.
