JC Chemistry Tuition — Where Understanding Comes Before Memorizing
JC Chemistry is not merely an easier version of O-Level; it is a completely different subject. The concept of shells is replaced by that of subshells and ‘reversible or not’ is now expressed in terms of an equilibrium constant. Reactions which previously had to be memorised are now required to be worked out on a mechanism by mechanism basis. We teach students how to make that adjustment and we teach this directly in opposition to the papers they will take.
The Moment JC Chemistry Stops Making Sense
Most students do not have difficulties with JC Chemistry right from the start, but instead experience trouble during the third or fourth week of JC1, at which point a topic which they had thought they understood is found to be based on rules which they have never come across before.
It is usually the case with two particular topics. The first of these is electron configuration. Having been taught at O-Level that shells can hold 2, 8, and 8 electrons, students find that this clear pattern is disrupted when they come across subshells and orbitals. The second instance is that of equilibrium. At O-Level, reactions are described as being either complete or reversible, but at JC level the question arises as to what occurs when both directions are taking place simultaneously at different rates, and how the balance is affected when there are changes in temperature or pressure.
It is not unreasonable to accept either of those changes. However, they happen rather quickly, and students who had been depending on memorisation during secondary school usually find that method no longer works just as the course load increases.
From the first lesson, our tutors teach each topic as it is taught in the curriculum, and link every explanation to how examiners actually award marks.
A Closer Look at the Papers You’ll Sit
It’s worth clarifying beforehand exactly what students are being assessed on. JC Chemistry exams vary by level, and the exam structure influences how we prepare students.
H2 Chemistry (9476) — four papers, and each one tests something different
Paper 1 is an hour-long multiple-choice exam consisting of 30 marks and accounts for 15% of the grade; it quickly covers the entire syllabus and the questions generally aim to check whether a student can identify the one distinctive feature between two similar options.
Paper 2 lasts for two hours, has 75 marks and accounts for 30% of the total; it is the structured paper – that is, the one in which students have to show their working step by step and for which method marks are given even if the final answer is wrong.
Paper 3 lasts for two hours, has a mark allocation of 80 and accounts for 35 per cent – making it the most extensive of the individual papers. In it, Section A must be attempted. Section B requires students to answer one question out of two, so they do have a small but genuine choice, and it is important to choose the right one. The free-response questions in this section usually draw on more than one topic.
Paper 4 is the practical one and it is taken in October; it lasts for two hours and thirty minutes and is worth 55 marks, which represents 20 per cent of the final mark. Students often do not prepare adequately for this paper since it is the last one to occur to them.
The entire syllabus spans Physical, Inorganic, and Organic Chemistry, and it is the more difficult one, often asking students to combine these areas rather than consider them separately.
H1 Chemistry (8873) — two papers, no practical
Paper 1 is a multiple-choice paper lasting 1 hour and carrying 30 marks; Paper 2 is 2 hours long and worth 80 marks and includes both structured and free-response questions. Since there is no practical paper at the H1 level, both the written papers count towards the total grade. H1 students receive the same amount of tutor attention as H2 students, with special emphasis on the two areas where marks are most frequently lost: imprecise definitions and incorrect terminology.
H3 Chemistry (9813) — for students nominated by their school
H3 consists of one written paper which lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes and is worth a total of 100 marks; it is taken at the same time as H2 and builds on the H2 syllabus by including two additional areas: Spectroscopic Techniques and Further Organic Mechanisms. The paper is assessed on one of four criteria: Distinction, Merit, Pass, or Ungraded; although it is not included in the University Admission Score it does indicate a student’s depth of knowledge when they are applying for courses in chemistry. We only advise offering H3 coaching to students who have been nominated and who have a strong H2 foundation.
What a Lesson With Us Actually Looks Like
Instead of teaching from a list of topics, we teach in a way that meets each topic’s requirements for the student.
Take organic chemistry as an example. A question might ask for the product of a reaction between an unfamiliar compound and a reagent the student hasn’t seen combined before. The answer isn’t found by recalling a table — it’s found by reasoning from the mechanism. So that’s what we practice: how to reason from mechanism rather than recall.
You can apply the same method throughout the syllabus.
We also train H2 students in the practical skills assessed in Paper 4, namely planning, manipulation and measurement, data presentation, and analysis and evaluation. Practical preparation is not pushed in at the end — it is carried out alongside the theoretical work right from the beginning of JC2.
The Practical Side of Working With Us
What Makes Our Approach Different
The lessons are based on how marks are awarded, not just what the syllabus states, and students learn where credit is allocated in a question.
Tutors are selected for their expertise in Chemistry and then paired with students whose needs match that expertise.
Digital diagrams, animations, and recorded walkthroughs help make abstract ideas easier to visualize—especially reaction mechanisms and equilibrium shifts.
After each chapter, unit, and half-syllabus, we run an assessment so progress is measured rather than assumed.
The syllabus is completed early so you have genuine time for revision, rather than having to rush in the last few weeks.
Since we offer classes only online, our fees are considerably lower than what a physical center would charge for the same standard of teaching.
JC Chemistry Tuition Fees
We publish our prices openly and include no additional charges. Select the tutor level that corresponds to both your objectives and your budget.

The dollar amount is higher than the rupee figure. Both figure versions include the lesson materials. Bills are issued in Singapore Dollars for students based in Singapore.
Steady Progress
Progress is measured rather than assumed through regular chapter and half-syllabus tests.
Exam-Focused Teaching
The tutors explain the mechanisms and carry out the calculations in the same order the examiners award marks, focusing on the specific terms that determine whether an answer is given credit.
Flexible Timing
The sessions can be arranged to suit the student’s schedule, including the evenings and weekends, and will be rescheduled if the school commitments change.
