IB English A: Language and Literature Syllabus
The IB English A: Language and Literature course helps students become confident readers, writers, and speakers. Students study both literary and non-literary texts. They learn how language shapes meaning and how different texts influence the way people think. The course also encourages students to look at ideas from different cultures and perspectives.
The syllabus is divided into three main areas.
Readers, Writers and Texts
In this part of the course, students explore how language is used in different types of texts. They study the purpose, audience, style, and structure of each text. They also learn how these choices affect the reader.
Time and Space
Students learn how culture, history, and society influence texts. They explore how the same text can have different meanings for different readers. This helps them develop a broader understanding of language and literature.
Intertextuality: Connecting Texts
Students compare different texts and identify common ideas, themes, and techniques. They learn how texts connect and how writers present similar ideas in different ways.
Throughout the course, students improve their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and analytical skills. These skills prepare them for the examinations and future university studies.
IB English A: Language and Literature Assessment Pattern
The assessment includes written examinations and an internal assessment. Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) students have slightly different assessment requirements.
Paper 1
Paper 1 tests a student’s ability to analyze unseen non-literary texts. Students explain how language, structure, and style create meaning. HL students analyze two texts, while SL students analyze one text.
Paper 2
Paper 2 is a comparative essay. Students compare two literary works they have studied during the course. They select one question from the examination paper and support their ideas with evidence from both works.
HL Essay
Higher Level students also complete an HL Essay. This is a 1,200 to 1,500-word essay based on one literary work or one non-literary body of work studied in class.
Individual Oral (IO)
The Individual Oral is the internal assessment for both HL and SL students. Students discuss one literary work and one non-literary body of work through a shared global issue. They explain how both texts present this issue using language and other features. Regular practice helps students speak clearly and present their ideas with confidence.
Our tutors prepare students for every part of the assessment. We teach answer writing, text analysis, essay planning, and speaking skills. Students also receive regular practice and detailed feedback so they feel confident before the final assessment.
Common Challenges Students Face
Many students find IB English A: Language and Literature more difficult than expected. Reading the texts is only the first step. Students also need to explain how language creates meaning and support their ideas with evidence.
Some students struggle to organize their essays. Others find it difficult to compare texts or analyze the writer’s choices. Many students also feel nervous before the Individual Oral. Our IB English tutor helps students overcome these challenges through regular practice and clear feedback. We teach them how to analyze texts, build strong arguments, manage their time, and speak with confidence. As students improve these skills, they become more confident in both school assessments and the final IB examinations.
